In order for the 1950s ranch she bought in Baton
Rouge to fill that bill, it needed to lighten up
considerably. Concentrating her budget on the public
rooms, Kellie maxed out natural light by enlarging
several doorways. She also refinished the wood floors
that hid under the rose-colored shag carpet and
painted just about every surface, indoors and out.
“Everything was dark wood paneling, and the
fireplaces were red brick,” Kellie says. “Addingbright
white everywhere made the house come alive.”
Post-remodel, the rooms explode with Kellie’s
polished but unfussy style. The elements are
traditional—antique chests and sideboards, a
camelback sofa, gold accents—but the look is young,
thanks to the white walls, simple sisal rugs, and
